Let's Meet

Team SPIF's

Captain:

Brian Buck

Captain Brian Buck of Team SPIF
Captain Brian Buck set a 24 Hour World
Record for a 3 wheeled recumbent Human
Powered Vehicle of 348.75 miles in
Milwaukee in 1991 at the Human Powerd Vehicle
International Speed Championships.
This was
in a fully enclosed, 3 wheeled, monococque framed
HPV weighing an incredible 63 pounds!
The "Davinci II, Purple Haze" was designed and built by the
Saginaw Arthur Hill High School Technology Club.
The Captain and Coach were consultants for the club.
Their experiences in 24 hour events resulted in Brian being
chosen to pilot the 24 hour event as well as take turns in the
200 meter sprints.  The pictures above and below were taken
on the one mile track in Milwaukee during the event.
In the picture at the right, Brian is passing
Gerry Tatrai, who won First Place
Overall in the
24 hour event in a 2 wheeled Moulton
(not 3 wheeled nor a recumbent).  Gerry placed
Third in RAAM ( Race Across AMerica) in
1991 and 1992 and won first place in
RAAM in 1993.
We saw Gerry again several years later on
a tandem at the National 24 Hour Challenge.
Captain Brian Buck of Team SPIF
Brian and Gerry swapped places and at times
paced each other during the event.  Brian had
the higher top speed but the weight of the vehicle
and chain problems worked against him.
Brian took 3rd place overall and was
the first 3 wheeled fully enclosed recumbent.
It escapes us what the 2nd place vehicle was.
Brian also races USCF events:
criteriums, road races and
tandem racing.
  He placed in the
top 10 in the Cat 5/Citizens class
in six events of the Tour de
Michigan series in 1993.
Notice the chainring in the window of
the vehicle in the picture above - thats
where his feet were as he pedaled and
his head was back where the other
window is on the right.
Let's Continue with:
More of the Captain.
